Another year of Sushi Kaji for Pat's Birthday. We get very excited for this meal because we know exactly what to expect and that is amazing Japanese food bursting with flavour. Because we expected excellence, when a few of the dishes fell short, we got disappointed. The crab meringue and uni were both lack luster. There was a ton of food so if they didn't give us those dishes, it would still have been more than satisfying. However, I would still recommend Kaji as the top Japanese restaurant in Toronto. I don't know why I am so focused on the negatives here, the rest of the food was clearly mouth watering and prepared with much technique. My favourite, which I did not expect was actually the Sauteed Monkfish. It had 3 different layers of Monkfish (I think they were belly, liver, and back) which brought in contrasting textures, something unexpected but nice.
This meal has got us extremely excited for our April trip to Hokkaido. Hokkaido is known to have, hands down, the best food of Japan. Everyone raves up the uni, unagi, squid, mutton dishes, and king crab. There is even a street known as the "Republic f Ramen'. As an ode to the upcoming trip, his birthday pressie pack included crab scissors and ceramic mortar (normally used to grind sesame seeds) from Everyday Japanese and put together a birthday gift pack for Pat. Included were also a super soft Shared hoodie and Wrench bottle opener from The Drake General Store. I love hunting for small objects of desire and seeing a gift pack come together.
A note to mention, my sister brought the sake she purchased from Kobe and that elevated the meal to a whole new level. It was an orgasmic experience with every sip. That is really the only way to put it. I think I drank most of the bottle. Oops!
